What is Bubble Tea?

Bubble tea, first created in Taiwan, is a sweet, refreshing tea with a texture unlike any tea drink! That's because the sweet, chewy tapioca balls, called boba, give the drink its fascinating flavor. Bubble tea is typically made from tea, milk, and tapioca pearls. Bubble tea comes in a wide variety of flavor options, features different types of tea - black, green or oolong - and comes with or without dairy, sweetener, and those distinctive pearls.

Bubble Tea Flavor Combinations

Teas

Using different types of tea in bubble tea brings different flavors.

  • Black tea, such as Earl Grey, is traditional for Boba tea and can provide subtle variations in flavor.

  • Green tea, including jasmine green tea and green tea powders like matcha are popular.

  • Fruit tea is often combined with fruit purees or fruit syrups to impart a sweeter flavor.

  • Can also be made into a coffee or energy drink.

Milks

Bubble tea drinks typically contain milk or a milk alternative, providing that signature creamy flavor.

  • Non-dairy creamers and milks, like almond or soy milk, are very popular in Boba tea.

  • Coconut milk lends itself to fruity bubble tea in particular.

  • Sweetened condensed milk is used in Thai tea and is common in more traditional teas
